As bookkeepers in and around Mandurah, Dudley Park, Coodanup, Greenfields, Erskine, Pinjarra and Meadow Springs, Western Australia it seems that we’ve known something that WBC has only just discovered: Clients actually respect and demand REAL customer service.
This amazing fact uncovered by WBC (one of the big four Australian Banks) was revealed by one of their bank tellers whilst we were doing some banking on behalf of one of our Mandurah bookkeeping clients
One wonders how much money was spent by their marketing department to learn that customers actually want to be treated like real people by, wait for it, real people.

BAS (Q4) Only 8 Days Away
Business Activity Statements, for business owners reporting quarterly, are due on 28 July 2009.
For many small business owners and especially for their bookkeepers in and around Mandurah, Dudley Park, and Meadow Springs, July is always a busy time of year.
With end of financial year reporting, together with reporting of the 01 April to 30 June quarter, businesses that are behind in their paperwork can struggle under extra pressure that they really do not need
Cash flow has certainly tightened up in the economy. As bookkeepers, we’ve seen that invoice payments are being dragged out longer and longer, as suppliers wait to be paid by customers, and service providers wait to be paid by their clients
The phone’s been ringing as desperate business owners in a panic wanting help with their MYOB and Quickbooks files. In most cases, they can simply email us the files and we’ll have a look at their reporting and can generally work out where the problems are within a short time
One lady contacted us after spending two days trying to reconcile her Quickbooks bank accounts. We had a look at her file and solved the problem in 35 minutes. Look at the time and stress she would have saved if she had contacted our bookkeeping company when she first noticed that there was a problem
As a small business owner we encourage you to focus on what you do best, and we’ll do the rest
Who’s Helping Small Business?
According to the Australian Federal Government they are helping small businesses with the Small Business and General Business Tax Break.
The package is such that small businesses can claim a bonus 50 per cent tax deduction for eligible assets costing more than $1,000 acquired from 13 December 2008 until 31 December 2009, and installed ready for use by 31 December 2010.
To benefit from this Tax Break a small business must have a turnover of less than $2.0 million a year.
Forget the tax break, shop at your locally owned store
This may look good on paper, but unless you actually need to make any investment in capital purchases such as motor vehicles or equipment, how does it actually help small business?
Good Bookkeeping Sense?
One wonders if it makes good bookkeeping sense to chase up a five cent debt
Apparently the Australian Taxation Office thinks so – but that could be because it’s a government organisation that really does not have to worry about the bottom line
Where is the sense (cents) in making a five cent payment?
One of our bookkeeping clients received a communication from the ATO advising that they owe $0.05
Let’s just think about this simple transaction in terms of human and energy resources:
There’s the cost the ATO $0.55 for the postage. That’s before you take into account the cost of printing the letter, the cost of the paper and the envelope, and the cost of paying someone to handle the letter.
Our bookkeeping client was going to make a phone call, but that would cost 500% more than the value of the enquiry
Whilst they do not have a problem paying the 5 cents, it’s quite obvious why ordinary hard-working Australians are having to pay so much tax overall.
Apparently there is a great deal of wastage of resources at the ATO – typical of the Public Service that doesn’t have to worry about keeping costs down
So, our bookkeeping client was going to do internet banking and make a BPAY transfer, to find out that the ATO does not accept such small amount of payment for a BPAY transfer
So how does our bookkeeping client pay the 5 cents that the ATO is asking for?
Are they expected to go to the Post Office and make a payment over the counter?
Again, what is the cost of that simple exercise?
The Government is concerned about carbon pollution, yet the ATO wants our bookkeeping client to jump in their gas guzzling motor vehicle to drive to the shopping centre, find a car park, then walk to the Post Office, stand in a queue, take up the time of a Post Office Staff member, to process a 5 cent payment
Can anyone from the Australian Taxation Office or the Federal Treasury please tell us, where is the sense (no pun in tended) in making this five cent payment?

Price Cutting – Helping Your Bookkeeping
Many small business owners in and around Mandurah, Dudley Park, Coodanup, Greenfields, Erskine, Pinjarra and Meadow Springs, Western Australia believe that by cutting the price of their goods and services, their business will increase. It an achieve more sales, but it can also affect your bottom line
If your existing customers are already buying from you, then how will they feel if you are selling the same product / service to new customers at a lesser rate? You’ll soon find you have to reduce the rate for your existing customers
Do you really believe that your prices are an issue? People are not necessarily buying because your price is too high. It’s just that they may want to conserve their cash to slow down in spending.
So unless you are sure that your price is too high, then cutting prices will not help your turnover. From a bookkeeping perspective, let’s say you sell your services for $100 per hour. You have overheads etc that work out o be $70/hr , so your profit is around $30 .
To make a sale you feel compelled to drop your rate to $80, meaning your profit is now $10 and not $30, resulting in a 66% cut in your profits for a price reduction of 20%
And now your time is worth $80 not $100
Offer Added Value
When times get tough, and competition increases, have a look at ways to increase your level of service, or offer extra value for money. Maybe you can offer extended warranty, or offer services that really do not cost you anything extra.
We have found many small business owners phoning around bookkeepers looking for the cheapest option. We’ve talked before about the difference between price and cost. A cheap bookkeeper may be a short term solution that can create long term problems

Most BAS Forms Wrong Says ATO
Could 80% of BAS forms really be completed incorrectly? Apparently this is the figure that the Australian Taxation Office estimate when reviewing Business Activity Statements.
Are You Paying More GST than You Should?
When you consider that many small business owners around Mandurah, Dudley Park, Coodanup, Greenfields, Erskine, Pinjarra and Meadow Springs believe that bookkeeping is an expense, rather than an investment, it is hardly surprising that so many people who have no idea what they are doing complete Business Activity Statements. Contact us today for more information.
Many clients approach our professional contract bookkeeping service because they realise that a mobile bookkeeper can save them heart-ache and stress in getting their paperwork upto date.
Speaking to a client in Greenfields last week, it transpired that he had absolutely no idea what was involved in running a business from the financial aspects. As long as there was money in his pocket at the end of each week to pay the bills, he was happy.
When the first BAS form arrived on his doorstep he just figured he’d guess what figures went where and hope that it would all sort it self out at the end of the financial year
The crazy thing is, that by having to report quarterly Business Activity Statements, small businesses are being encouraged to record their business activities every three months.
If you leave it all for your accountant at the end of the financial year, then guess what? It’s all too late.
If you’re now faced with a large tax liability after the end of the year, there’s nothing you can do about it. Whereas if you are aware of the situation beforehand, then there maybe avenues that you can follow to reduce your tax liability. We are not registered tax agents and cannot give guidance in such matters, so you need to speak to your accountant.
We’ll look at your bookkeeping and assess your requirements. It’s not uncommon for us to find some major savings for our clients. Contact us today for more information.

The Australian Federal Government is offering a strong incentive to all tax payers in 2007 – 2008 to get their tax returns lodged before 30 June 2009. If you’ve paid personal tax in that time, (or are due to pay tax) then the Government will hand you back a cheque of upto $900.00
There are a few items on the checklist that you need to address to qualify:
- You need to have been an Australian Resident and to have paid tax within the financial year 1st July 2007 – 30 June 2008
- You need to have paid tax ( or be due to pay tax) within that time frame
- If you’ve earned under the $80,000, then you may be eligible depending on your adjusted tax liability. To qualify, you need to earn less than $80,000 and have an adjusted tax liability of more than zero. In simple English, the ATO will not pay you if you haven’t paid them
- The adjusted tax liability is calculated after taking out tax offsets and other credits, such as the low income tax offset, the seniors tax offset and franking credits on dividends.
- You can be self-employed and receive the bonus. Indeed you spouse may not be eligible, but you may be eligible, so it’s not based on household income, it’s based on personal income
The Australian Government is hoping that the refund will stimulate the economy, so you’d better head down to your local shopping centre and spend your bonus – And remember – make sure you spend it all at once!
However, many people that we’ve spoken to will be using the refund to pay existing bills, or reduce their credit card debt.
When the economy is on the downturn and no one is quite sure where the next dollar is coming from, it seems a little naive for the Government to think that people will continue consumer spending rather than saving it for a rainy day, or to reduce existing debts.
If you are cashed up and earn less than $30,342 and make a $900 personal contribution to super, you’ll be eligible for the $1.50 super co-contribution. The Government will stick another $1350 into your super fund. Workers earning up to $60,342 are eligible for a partial co-contribution.
If your haven’t got your book-keeping under control, and are not ready for a tax bonus, contact our Rockingham team of mobile book-keepers now
